Our tutors and staff in Charlotte-University Area consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Charlotte-University Area know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores. We selectively choose tutors who know local curriculum and can link Sylvan lessons to what’s being taught in school.

Meredith Freeman
Executive Director
Meredith joined the Sylvan Learning team in 2001 and is the Executive Director at Sylvan Learning in Burlington, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, NC. She comes to Sylvan with a degree in Psychology from UNC Wilmington. She has held a variety of positions throughout her Sylvan career and decided in 2003 to make Burlington her home. Her favorite thing about her position is watching each student’s confidence grow and changing the “I can’t” attitude to “I can.”
Meredith’s favorite day at Sylvan…When a parent came up to me and asked me for a hug because we had done with her child something she thought was impossible.
Christina Fisher
Regional Director
Christina joined Sylvan in 2015 as a Center Director with 13 years of teaching experience. She graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, K-12 Reading Certification, and a Master’s in Instructional Technology. Christina served in many leadership roles as an educator but is most proud of being nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science. She has a lifelong love of teaching and her passion for education is rewarded by Sylvan’s success stories.
Jaime Alsop
Center Director
Jaime currently serves as the Director of Education for our Sylvan Learning Center in Charlotte-University. Jaime holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Jaime brings years of teaching experience from Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Cabarrus County Schools, and Public Charter Schools. A native of Virginia, Jaime loves spending time with her son and family. She also enjoys reading, spending time with friends, and traveling.
Alyssa Kennedy
Lead Tutor
Alyssa is originally from Pennsylvania. She has taught in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Florida, and presently in North Carolina. Her background includes Early Childhood Education, Music Education, Math Tutoring, SAT Prep, ACT Prep, and working both for the Navy and Private contractors for early education. Alyssa has been a Sylvan tutor and team lead for 3 years. Currently, she is also the Director of Bands in a charter school located in Concord. Other interests outside of Sylvan & music include theater, dance choreography, coaching volleyball, lacrosse, reading & writing novels, and supporting the arts in any way possible.
Jasmin Harrison
Tutor
Jasmin is a 3-5 Exceptional Children’s teacher in Charlotte, NC. She has been tutoring with Sylvan since 2023. Jasmin studied elementary education and special education at North Carolina A&T State University. Outside of teaching, Jasmin loves to spend her time cooking and exploring new shows.
Sarah McClelland
Tutor
Sarah is a 3rd grade reading teacher in Charlotte, NC. She started tutoring at Sylvan in 2023 and loves teaching a variety of subjects at Sylvan. She loves getting to know her students and relating learning material to their real life. Sarah studied elementary education at Elon University. Outside of teaching Sarah loves to bake and spend time with her family.
Jody Neill-Shaughnessy
Tutor
Jody is a first grade teacher in Kannapolis, NC. While she enjoys teaching several different programs at Sylvan, she finds the greatest joy in teaching reading. She been with Sylvan Charlotte since 2001. Jody studied at Buffalo State College. When Jody isn’t at Sylvan, she enjoys working out, volunteering at a local animal shelter, and reading.
