Our tutors and staff in Albemarle consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Albemarle know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores. We selectively choose tutors who know local curriculum and can link Sylvan lessons to what’s being taught in school.

Marianne Bright
Center Director/Owner
Marianne opened the Stanly/Montgomery Sylvan territory in 2007 after serving 15 years as president of the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce. As owner-operator of the Albemarle center and Locust satellite center, she leads our daily management, inquiry, marketing, and expansion efforts. As a former Sylvan mom, she is inspired daily by the success stories she experiences as a member of the extended Sylvan family! Marianne is extremely proud to serve the area’s children and families and honored to be involved in many community activities. Currently, she is on the board of directors of GHA Autism Supports and is an active member of Stanly Women’s Associated Network (SWAN).
Rick Beam
Assistant Center Director
Rick has served the local Sylvan centers since 2009. He is a lifelong educator, having been a high school English teacher for more than 30 years. He also is an avid travel leader. During his teaching career, and in the years since his retirement from public education, he has organized and chaperoned more than 25 excursions to Great Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Iceland. He is very involved in his community, having served as president of the Wadesboro Civitan Club. At Sylvan, you’ll see him greeting students and parents, managing and coaching the teaching staff and preparing the center for daily instruction.
Kathy Thorpe
Instructor/Assessment Administrator
A native of Albemarle, Kathy spent the majority of her teaching career with Stanly County Schools, retiring in 2012 from Endy Elementary School. She is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a master’s degree from Wingate University. She earned her National Board Certification in early childhood education. Kathy began tutoring at Sylvan in 2008 and her role here has grown to include test proctoring, data management and administrative support.
