Our tutors and staff in Bakersfield consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Bakersfield know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores. We selectively choose tutors who know local curriculum and can link Sylvan lessons to what’s being taught in school.

Delia Navarro
Executive Director
A proud member of the Bakersfield Sylvan team since 2008, Delia chose a career in education, because she knew from a young age that her life’s work would be helping others. Working at Sylvan has allowed her to do just that. She finds having the opportunity to observe students realizing and reaching their fullest potential on a daily basis extremely rewarding. She is a cum laude graduate from the University of California, Irvine with roots here in the central valley. When Delia isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her enjoying time with her husband and their son and daughter. Her favorite hobbies include traveling and reading.
Julia Lopez
Center Director
Julia began working at Sylvan of Bakersfield in October 2012 with Supplemental Educational Services. She has worked in the educational field since 2008 and began working in education during her studies at California State University, Bakersfield. Prior to Sylvan, Julia was a tutor for Migrant students at local Bakersfield schools. Julia has always enjoyed working with families so she truly enjoys her role as Center Director and having the opportunity to work with our teachers and staff to help our Sylvan families accomplish their educational goals. In her free time, Julia enjoys spending time with her family and going on unexpected weekend getaways.
Ms. Melanie
Tutor
Ms. Melanie is a graduate of California State University, Bakersfield, where she obtained a degree in Chemistry. Previous to Sylvan Learning of Bakersfield, Melanie was a science teacher and worked for the El Tejon School District. Before that she was a site manager at an after school program in the Panama Buena-Vista School District of Bakersfield, CA. She has tutored privately for over ten years. Melanie enjoys teaching a variety of subject areas, including math, science, and music. In her free time, Melanie enjoys yoga and traveling.
