Jack Evans

Center Director

Mr. Jack is the certified Director for Sylvan Learning-Trussville. Mr. Jack joined the Sylvan team in February 2023 as a part-time tutor and became Director following the departure of the previous center director in July, 2023. He is also certified in SylvanSync Beginning Reading, Reading, Mathematics, Writing, Advanced Study Skills, ACT/SAT Prep, and Sylvan STEM Robotics. After honorably serving the United States in the U.S. Marine Corps, Mr. Jack earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. He continued his education at Hofstra University Maurice A. Deane School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctorate. Mr. Jack has mentored and taught students ages 4 through adult. He served as Special Adjunct Professor of Law at Hofstra Law School, from 2009 through 2013. While working as an attorney, he studied at the International Institute for Restorative Practices, where he learned to be a trainer of restorative conference facilitator. He then used this knowledge to work with at-risk youth on Long Island, ages 8-17 at Hope for Youth. Mr. Jack’s favorite moments are the “A-ha!” moments when a student finally grasps a concept with which he/she had been struggling.

Dr. Andrew Gibson

Lead Teacher

Dr. Andrew Gibson-With over 25 years of experience at Sylvan, Dr. Andy is a veteran Sylvan tutor. Dr. Andy specializes in teaching ACT and SAT college preparation courses and Advanced Study Skills. He also teaches Sylvan Math Essentials, higher level math, and Reading and Writing skills. Dr. Andy holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration, a PhD in Molecular Biology from CUNY Graduate School, and completed his training at UAB where he currently is a scientist. Dr. Andy has over 25 years of experience in laboratory genetic research and in teaching at the college level.

Rochelle Johnson

Teacher

Ms. Rochelle earned her Bachelor Of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Alabama State University. She continued her education at University of Alabama in Birmingham. Ms. Rochelle Johnson retired from Birmingham City Schools after 29 years of service in 2009. She taught students from K-5.Ms. Rochelle started her career at Sylvan Learning Center 12 years ago serving in all capacities as a tutor, teacher and interim center director. She also is Sylvan Sync certified in Reading. Rochelle Johnson is a dedicated hard worker, team player and committed to teaching students.

Dorothy Vineyard

Teacher

Mrs. Vineyard joined Sylvan Learning in 1995. Her service has been part-time except for a brief stint as Director of Education when there was a Center Point location. She has served as Lead Teacher and even did the billing for a while. Mrs. Vineyard aka Miss Dot looks forward to each session because she gets such joy when students have that moment when the light bulb clicks on, and they finally understand a concept that has been slowing their progress. Identification of a student’s specific needs is made possible by the setting at Sylvan according to Miss Dot. She says this a valuable aspect in working with all ages — kindergarten through adult. Mrs. Vineyard taught Mathematics, English, and Computer Science at Huffman High School. Her experience includes teaching courses at various levels including remedial, basic, regular, honors and advanced placement. She also coached Math teams and Academic Teams there. One of her math teams placed 6th in a national competition in Miami, Florida. Mrs. Vineyard has earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa with a major in Mathematics and a minor in English. While completing that degree she also earned a Teacher’s Certificate. Later, she completed a Master of Arts degree in Education with a concentration in Mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has also done additional studies related to teaching Advanced Placement Computer Science

Sabrina Wright

Teacher

 Ms. Sabrina has served as a certified educator for over 20 years and has been with Sylvan for six years. She is a dedicated educator and was selected as one of the “Sweet 16” Teacher of the Year finalists among 572 candidates for the state of Alabama during the 2019-2020 school year. Ms. Sabrina received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Mobile and a Master’s in Elementary Education from Troy University. She also received an Ed (Educational Specialist) degree in Instructional Leadership and Administration from Troy University in June 2023. Ms. Sabrina currently serves as a Math Coach at her school and a Lead Mentor for teachers with 1-3 years of experience in her school district. One of her greatest passions is using her knowledge, expertise, and talent to help develop new and novice teachers by enhancing their pedagogical practices. Ms. Sabrina has served as a program administrator for various summer camp, participated on a Teacher Advisory Board in making decisions for schools, and acted as a Professional Development facilitator to share learning with other teachers throughout the district. Among the many roles Ms. Sabrina is involved in, she is most passionate about working with students. She believes that helping children into becoming their best selves is her life purpose.

Brandi T Mack

Teacher

Ms. Mack is a graduate of Tarrant High School where she graduated as Class Salutatorian. After high school, she attended Jefferson State Community College where she earned an Associate of Science Degree in Accounting and Business Administration. She continued her education by earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and Management from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. Ms. Mack grew up in a family of educator, including her mother Cynthia Hurd Threatt and sister Kimberly Threatt Myers, a former Sylvan Instructor. Ms. Mack is a Certified Sylvan Instructor in Mathematics and Reading, whose goal is to inspire the next generation in achieving their academic goals.
