Rosanne Ramsay

Teacher

My name is Rosanne and I have been a tutor with Sylvan for about 7 years. I am also a substitute teacher for the TDSB. I earned my bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto and my Teaching degree at the University of Ottawa. I have experience teaching children from Kindergarten to Grade 8. I hold additional qualifications in reading, ESL and Special Education. What I love most about the Sylvan approach is the way it is custom made to meet a student’s diverse needs. When a child gains confidence because they have achieved a goal, or acquired a new skill, that is the moment I enjoy. I love the teaching profession because allows me to participate in the creation of that magical moment.

Vincent Tse

Teacher

My name is Vincent and teaching is a second career for me as I had worked in a corporate environment for over a decade. I decided to go into teaching as I wanted a career that was both challenging and fulfilling. I earned my Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies from Western University and a Master of Science in Elementary Education from Medaille University. I am an Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certified teacher who has teaching experience from Grade 1 to Grade 6.

I enjoy working at Sylvan because of its personalized learning program that fits the needs of each student, the supportive environment of my fellow tutors and the structured curriculum that ensures both consistency and effectiveness. I love the teaching profession because it is a rewarding career where I can make a positive impact on students and see them develop and grow as learners.

Mikaela Hwang

Teacher

I am Mikaela, an OCT certified teacher with experience working with students across the primary, junior, and intermediate divisions. I earned my bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto and studied education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Working at Sylvan is rewarding for me when I see students arrive eager to begin their lessons, engage with concepts they are working to master, and leave with improved skills in math or language. I love the teaching profession because it allows me to support students on their journey to becoming independent and confident learners.

Catherine Machado-Marques

Teacher

My name is Catherine and I am a primary/junior teacher with the HDSB. I have a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) and a Master of Arts degree in Child Study and Education from OISE. I also hold additional qualifications in Special Education and ESL. I have experience teaching students from pre-k to grade 8. I absolutely love being a teacher! My passion for teaching and learning extends beyond the classroom, which is why I was so drawn to Sylvan.

Sylvan encompases many of the values I look for in an educational setting, including taking a strengths-based approach to teaching and encouraging a growth mindset. The learning environment, teaching team, and tailored curriculum also help promote a sense of community and belonging. I find that this tends to make learning a positive experience for students with diverse needs!
