Fauzia Akhter
Center Director
Fauzia is the Center Director for Sylvan Learning of Skyview Ranch NE in Calgary. As a certified science teacher in both Ontario and Alberta, she’s incredibly passionate about inspiring her students to learn science with enthusiasm and curiosity. Although her expertise lies in junior and senior high school Biology, Chemistry, Math, General Sciences, Geography, and Environmental Science; she genuinely enjoys working with students of all grade levels. She is an active coordinator for CYSF (Calgary Youth Science Fair), the Canadian Biology Olympiad Competition, and the National Biology Competition (organized by the University of Toronto).
Fauzia holds a master’s degree in Zoology from a university overseas, another master’s in Environmental Science from the University of Toronto, along with a Bachelor of Education (BEd). With over ten years of experience teaching science, she firmly believes that every child has a unique learning style. That’s why she advocates for personalized lesson plans to support each learner’s individual needs. When she began tutoring at Sylvan, she found that Sylvan’s approach matched her belief in fostering student success in both academics and self-confidence.
Fauzia deeply cares about her students and is dedicated to helping them grow—not only in their studies but also in their self-assurance and outlook on learning. As a result, she now owns a Sylvan Learning center in Skyview Ranch NE; a community she feels closely connected to, with a mission to help local students achieve their academic dreams.
Outside of her role at Sylvan, Fauzia is a devoted mom who loves spending time with her family. Whether they’re at the library, shopping mall, exploring nature, or enjoying a 3D animated movie (especially Pixar films!) at the Cineplex, she treasures these moments together.
Aleta McGovern
Director of Education
As the Director of Education for the Skyview location, Aleta oversees the educational integrity of our programs, administers assessments, and manages/trains our team of tutors. Prior to becoming a director, she worked as a teacher in schools with students of all ages (Kindergarten to Gr. 12), as well as a tutor for Sylvan Learning. Not only does Aleta have a Bachelor of Education, specializing in Drama; but she also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama) and a Minor in Career and Technology Studies (CTS) with a focus on Community Health, all from the University of Lethbridge. Aleta has a passion for helping students to discover their potential, and she loves to incorporate theatre skills into core subjects to help students learn in dynamic ways.
When Aleta isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her doing aerial yoga, drawing, playing board/card games, or spending time with friends, family, and pets.
Shirisha
Tutor
Shirisha is passionate about helping students unlock their potential, inspiring curiosity, and building confidence in a supportive learning environment. She believes in making complex topics engaging and accessible, as well as fostering a love for learning that lasts beyond the classroom.
With a strong foundation in Biotechnology (Master of Science in Biochemistry) and a Bachelor of Education, Shirisha brings over six years of experience teaching grades 2-12 in Science, Math, and English. Teaching is more than a profession to her; it’s a calling.
In addition to academics, Shirisha values creativity and self-expression: with hobbies that include drawing, painting, Kuchipudi classical dance, and swimming. This blend of interests shapes her teaching style, adding depth and energy to her lessons. She’s excited to support each student on their educational journey and to help them reach new heights.
Ken
Tutor
Ken is an international student from Vietnam. He attended high school here in Canada, and is now an Engineering student at the University of Calgary.
When he first came to Canada, he noticed how difficult it was to study abroad, away from family and loved ones. This inspired him to dedicate some time to help students who have been in similar circumstances to his own. This is when he became a Teaching Assistant within the high school that he graduated from. Afterwards, Ken realized how much he loved teaching and helping other students. He looks to continue helping others to succeed in their studies.
When Ken is not at work, you can find him drawing, crocheting, and spending time with friends.
